• Freelance Writer’s Income Report- October

    Ok, I’m inspired!

I’m convinced that laying out my jobs, hours and earnings is a positive thing to do for future and wanna-be freelance writers. Of course, it’s scary to tell people what you make, what you charge, and how many hours you are sitting on your arse in front of the computer. I always write about 3-4 caveats (oh, I worked only XX hours, or we had this and this going on), but if Berry-Brewer can do it, and Dana Prince can do it, then darnit, I’m going to do it, too!

    October:

    • Web content ongoing contract 810
    • Magazine feature article 300
    • Editing (curriculum) 809
    • Book review for start up magazine 150
    • Two articles (smallish) for the same magazine 500
    • Transcription 120

    TOTAL: $2,689

This month I worked 93 hours, meaning I billed out at a rate of about $28/hr-  not too bad for a  job that lets me work when I want to, how I want to. It’s not near what, for example, my husband makes, or some of my friends make, but, heck, I get to sleep til 9, pick and choose my jobs, work in my sweats, pick up my kids from school and go to the gym three times a week in the middle of the day. Can they say that? 😛  (Oops, see, those caveats. . . see how sensitive we are about our $$$)

Of course, I work on a “cash” accounting system, meaning that I count the money when it comes in, so some of these payments were from things I did in earlier months, but, hey, you get a general idea. If you look at my past income report, you’ll see this is generally about what I make on average. I’m ok with it, my family is ok with it, so things are good!

What’s up for the future month? Well, my background undergrad work in education tends to lead me in an interesting direction. I like to grade essay exams on a freelance basis. For example, test administration places like ETS, CAE and Pearson hire people with an education and/or writing background to assign scores to students’ high-stakes essays. I have at least two of those projects in November, and I like them alot.

One Responseso far.
