• Shh – My Husband’s Home!

Seriously, if my husband worked from home everyday, neither of us would have jobs. We tend to feed off each other’s wandering distractions. He watches junk food TV and fields numerous calls from his friends as he “works” on my couch. Yes, I can hear him from my desk across thehouse. I’m about to kick his butt back to his dusty 1950’s- era office.

Recently at About.com I wrote about the distractions that come from working at home. Between the hub and the dog, I’m about to phone it in.

As a writer, do you need absolute quiet to write, or are you perhaps a mommy-writer who thinks silence simply means someone’s doing something they shouldn’t?

I have a very difficult time doing anything other than research when my husband and my daughter are home. They try very hard to give me some room to work, but despite their best efforts they forget and interrupt me every half an hour or so. The only time I can find my groove is when the house is totally silent and I know I have a few hours before I will be interrupted. My best time for doing any work, writing or web design, is in the middle of the night when the world silent and I feel like I’m the only one in existence.

That being said, my husband is an amazing sounding board for me. Quite often I’ll ask him to come talk to me while I’m fixing dinner and rambling on about an idea. He and I are total opposites in many areas so his feedback often helps me pull my thoughts into a more linear, cohesive form. Many times, his very different viewpoint shows me takes on an idea that I had never considered.

    Hi

I am definitely a Mommy (Mummy as I’m from NZ) writer. Most times I have to have music on, or if the kids are home I have to be able to hear that they are playing nicely (ages 5 and 7).

What distracts me is the “Mum he did this” or “Mum I’m hungry. At these times I am sometimes literally pulling my hair out.

I think it’s common for mommies to be writers. They can see their kids playing.
