• Freelance Writing Jobs

Well, many of my readers know that I am recently done with a four-week teaching assignment with the Upward Bound program at Michigan State University. Although I absolutely adored some of my students, who had ambition, drive and strong, sparkling personalities, I am happy to be back to my freelance writing. In that vein, I’ve spend the last two days applying to open freelance writing positions out there in the internet-o-sphere. I applied for 17 open writing projects, and will likely garner 2 of those.

I know this because I’ve been tracking my apply/hire rate for over 3 years now. It helps me to correctly estimate how many positions I can safely apply for, and how much work I am likely to have next week or next month. In addition, knowing that I am likely to get at least 2 bites means that I can hold out for the projects that I want to take on- things that I am passionate about, and that makes everyone happier.

Fellow writers who are interested in tracking this stat can find an example spreadsheet at www.freelancewrite.about.com (my site owned by the New York Times Company).

    Happy writing!
