• Freelance Writing Jobs

One of the most popular areas of my site at About.com is the freelance writing jobs listing. It regularly ranks high in my traffic reports.

I began by listing over 50+ links in no discernable pattern. My editors asked that those be broken out, so I then simply ranked them in groups of ten. Recently another editor asked that they be better organized, and suggested that I put them into groups (which was a head-slapping DUH moment for me). They are now as follows:

My suggestion for getting freelance writing jobs is this: spend about 10% of your freelance writing work time seeking new jobs, no matter what other projects you have on your plate. Doing so is one of the only ways to beat the feast or famine cycle that we freelancers tend to get ourselves into. Go over your favorite lists in small chunks, and rotate which lists you use. Don’t bookmark and use every single job board you come across- concentrate only on those that best meet your needs.

If you’re also seeking to get published in magazines via queries, you can reduce your job search time to about 5%, spending the other 5% on pitching editors. This method has worked fairly well for me.
