• Free Copy Giveaway! Stephen King’s On Writing

The first all-nighter I ever pulled was in high school. Unfortunately, it wasn’t with any boys, or even girlfriends, and it wasn’t because I had a big test or whatnot.

    It was with Stephen King.

I simply could not stop reading his books. Soon after receiving the Dark Tower 1,2 and 3 for Christmas, I stayed up from evening to 6am the next morning. To this day, I could quote you lines from the series, lines that, in my teenage angst, I took very seriously.

I accidentally ordered an extra copy of On Writing, which is what happens when I work at 11 pm. You benefit, though. Simply leave me a comment and I’ll have my hub randomly choose a number, and send the other copy (new and clean!) to you at no charge.

Caveats/Rules: You’ll have to give me your addy (via email or phone), AND you have to answer a question/share with your fellow writers:

Why is Stephen King so darn successful as a writer? It’s ok to guess if you’re not a fan. I won’t hold it against you! 🙂

I’ve been wanting to read this book for a long time and have heard great things about it. I love Stephen King and heard somewhere that his ultimate goal was to write a book so scary he’d be too afraid to finish writing it. His book, “It” was too scary for me. I tried to read it about 15 years ago and I couldn’t get past the first 30 some-odd pages and that has never happened to me before. I have an extremely vivid imagination that gets the better of me so I just put the book in a drawer and hid from it. I did later see the movie so know how it ends but the book was much more frightening and created coulrophobia in me (see http://www.ihateclowns.com)

I hope I win this. But, I do hope he doesn’t talk about clowns in it. 🙂

  2. Allena says:

Dana- You’re funny! I haven’t read my copy yet, so I don’t know if there are clowns:} I’m loling here. Poor thing!

  3. Anne Vinnola says:

Stephen King is fascinating. He writes similar but never the same books and keeps you turning the page til the end.

  4. Cher'ley says:

I enjoyed his book. I don’t know that I took away a lot of writing information, but I read it straight through and marked several areas to return to. I think I’ll get more from a second reading, but it is entertaining.

  5. Anonymous says:

It’s a great book, I read a library copy years ago. King is great at entertaining his readers, and there’s a lot of heart too. From what he’s said about his writing life, he also works very hard at what he does, and rarely takes days off.

OK, now I need to get to work! 🙂

Allena, that anonymous person above is me, Marcia. Like a dork, I hit enter before filling in all the fields!

  7. Jodi says:

Although I’m familiar with Stephen King’s writing I’d have to say I’m not a big fan. But I think one of the reasons he’s such a big hit is he books are unpredictable. Many writers develop a “formula” and after reading a few of their books you can guess where they’re going and what’s going to happen once you’ve read a few chapters. That never happens with King!

  8. Lea Schizas says:

I’m not entering because I have the book but wanted to say congratulations to the upcoming winner because King tells it like it is. A great read.

  9. Teresa Hall says:

I think Stephen King is so successful because he tweaks the imagination into the unimaginable. He can take any situation and turn it into something chilling or fearful- much like our own minds create fear!

  10. David Loeff says:

I’ve never been able to figure that out, not that I’ve read much of his writing. He tells a good story, but then a lot of writers do.

I don’t care much for his style however. For style, I read Jack Vance, the fantasy and science fiction writer. Vance admires P. G. Wodehouse and there are some stylistic similarities between the two.

I recently read a King story in Esquire magazine. He starts well with an analysis of his character’s psyche, but the horror action that followed bored me to tears.

  11. Brendan Epps says:

Stephen King is so successful because he’s able to fuse his style of writing with what people want. He toes the fine line between writing with passion and selling out beautifully.

  12. Rachon says:

I know exactly what you mean. He kept me up a few nights too. Don’t know if I was reading because I was scared or scared because I was reading.

  13. Allena says:

And the winner is…. #4 er #5 Marcia.

In the interest of full disclosure, my Marcia is a “friend” over at WOW- Women on Writing. However, the magic number (4) was chosen by my extra sweet assistant-husband-accountant. So this is on the up and up. 🙂
