• Feeling philanthropic? Ways to Combine Writing and Saving the World

I’ve suffered from the delusion that I could save the world, or at least my small part of it, on and off for years. In fact, I’m pretty sure I should have been a Peace Corps worker. But, those days are gone, and now all of a sudden I have this thing called a mortgage, not to mention two children’s mouths to feed.

However, I have begun exploring ways to combine volunteerism and my career, a few of which follow.

    • Provide website copy
    • Providing translation of non profit/agency materials
    • Allowing free or reduced ads from non profits into my (your) magazine
    • Using your vast netwrok of online contacts to raise awareness, troll for donations
    • Grant and proposal writing (or editing)
    • Press releases
    • Newsletter writing (editing)
    • Documentation/reporting documents
    • Prison pen pal
    • Case study writing
    • Grant research
    • Media outreach
    • Online course writing (how to find a job, how to learn to type, how tow rite your resume- other skill areas needed by the general population to imprive their QOL)
    • Resume critique/correction/editing
    • Book donation drive (orphanages, prisons)
    • Sample letter writer (produce templates for letter drives to Legislators/newspapers)
    • Screenwriting for documentaries

The best resource I’ve found thus far is VolunteerMatch, will allows you to search locally and virtually with a keyword such as Writing, Editing, PR.

Do you volunteer with your writing, or are you perhaps “all written out” by the end of a work day?
